Earth Week kicks off!

The 54th Earth Day is next Monday, April 22nd. The theme this year is Planet vs. Plastics

Check out this 50 second video to find out why.

You can sign the petition for the Global Plastics Treaty here. Which, among many things, seeks a 60% of reduction of all fossil fuel-based plastic production by 2040. It is baffling the number of places plastic is found these days, did you watch the video? It's in our food!

Think microplastics are only found in water dwelling animals? Here's an article from Ocean Conservancy noting that microplastics are found in the flesh of land animals as well. Vegans aren't safe from them either, microplastics are everywhere! They're in our tofu!!

I found this helpful article from Environmental Working Group about reducing the microplastics in our homemade meals with some simple tweaks like replacing a plastic cutting board and microwaving foods in glass containers.

If you really want to dig into the science, here's a position paper on the impact that animal agriculture is having on our climate.

For the rest of the week, I'll be sharing more information on why we need to be concerned about the state of our planet, some of the things you probably haven't thought about but which actually have a huge impact, and ways we can tread more lightly on our great Mother Earth.

If you're itching for more info now, visit my first blog from this month where I link some of my previous Earth Week blogs. We'll wrap up Earth Week with the launch of Did You Bring the Hummus Podcast Season 5 with a very special guest! I cannot wait to introduce you, stay tuned!

Kimberly, I know this is a serious matter, still your statement "microplastic is in our tofu" made me smile. I think tofu isn't necessarily an unproblematic food anyway, think of GMOs, phytates and lectins, allergens and estrogenic compounds. Though the latter are supposed to counteract menopause symptoms, have you heard of that? Tamara

I'm glad it made you smile, I know I tackle a lot of heavy stuff so whenever I can bring in some humor, I'm happy to do it. Yup, soy is actually good for us and eating edamame can quell menopausal symptoms. There is a lot of misinformation out there about soy, which is really unfortunate. I like to point people who have questions about this stuff to https://nutritionfacts.org/ it's all research-based information and they can explain the science-y stuff better than I ever could 😃

Kimberley, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog today on earth week. Recycling and sustainability and organics are very popular too here in Belper. There is a local shop here called Eartharmony that sells organic products and produce from local farmers, and vegan items too. If you're curious to see, their website is https://eartharmony.online/ They are also closely linked to the local CIC on recycling plastics, called Hidden Potential, and their facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/hiddenpotentialbelper/

I'm looking forward to reading more about this topic in your future posts. Many thanks! Alice :)
