In today's Veganuary email, the topic of focus Is nutrition and among the valuable resources mentioned is Dr. Michael Greger's Daily Dozen App, which serves as an excellent tool for individuals seeking to optimize their nutritional intake. This app is designed to simplify the process of ensuring that you consume a wide variety of essential foods every day, making it easier for anyone interested in improving their diet to stay on track. The concept of the Daily Dozen was first introduced in Dr. Greger's highly regarded book, *How Not to Die*. This book, while quite dense and packed with scientific research and evidence, is an excellent read for those who are passionate about understanding the science behind nutrition and health. It delves deeply into various aspects of diet and lifestyle, providing readers with insights into how certain foods can prevent chronic diseases and promote overall well-being. For those who appreciate a more scientific approach to nutrition, this book is not only informative but also empowering, as it equips readers with knowledge that can lead to healthier life choices.
To utilize the Daily Dozen effectively, you simply log into the app each day and check off the foods you have consumed. The app features a straightforward interface (see photos above - no judging that my phone very clearly needs to be charged!) that allows users to easily track their intake of various food categories, which include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, among others. The more items you check off, the more nutrient-dense your day has been, indicating that you have successfully incorporated a diverse array of foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients into your diet.
One of the significant advantages of using the Daily Dozen App is that it encourages you to focus on whole, plant-based foods. As you strive to check off all the boxes, you may find that you naturally crowd out less ideal or less healthy food options. This is a pretty neat aspect of the app's design; by prioritizing nutrient-dense foods, you are likely to feel fuller and more satisfied, which can lead to a reduction in cravings for processed or unhealthy snacks. Consequently, this not only helps in achieving better health outcomes but also fosters a more mindful approach to eating. The Daily Dozen App is a powerful ally for anyone looking to enhance their nutritional habits during Veganuary and beyond. By embracing the principles outlined in Dr. Greger's work and utilizing this app, you can take significant steps toward improving your overall health and well-being.
You'll no doubt notice that the Daily Dozen doesn't have a spot for marking off veggie or Beyond Burgers or a pint of So Delicious ice cream because this really is an optimal list. While I do often strive to eat the Daily Dozen, I also enjoy indulgent foods and I definitely recognize how important they are when transitioning from an animal-centered diet to a plant-centered one. Quick caveat here: Veganism is not a diet, it is a guiding philosophy and a lifestyle that absolutely does include a diet component. I'll talk more about this in an upcoming blog.
I've had the opportunity to speak with some incredible doctors on my podcast, check out these episodes for more info on how to truly care for yourself while caring for the animals and the planet.

Going through the many boxes one has to check in the daily dozen makes me feel guilty. Does coffee qualify as beans? I am a "Juice Plus" customer and religiously take my daily dose of veggie, fruit, berries and Omega capsules.
Never heard of. Veganuary, but it’s clever.
I really like to listen to Dr Gregor. He has so much knowledge.
I have booked at that app but not used it yet. I remember it looked useful, but just never got around to trying it out. Thank you for the great recommendation.
Keep up the healthy lifestyle!

Kimberly, I love the word "Veganuary"! And the emphasis on nutrition. The app sounds very interesting. People who love creatures and have a vegan heart must be very careful to stay nutritionally healthy. So I'm glad you're emphasizing that.
