What’s your favorite plant milk?

If you’re following along with the Veganuary emails, you know today is all about plant milks.

When I first went vegetarian in 2001, soy milk was the easiest milk to find cold and honestly, at the time, I didn't care for it. I thought it tasted "too beany" and It was richer than what I was used to as In my late childhood and teens my mom had switched the milk In the house to skim milk. So, I was used to very watery milk In my cereal. I was never one to drink milk by the glass but I did need my cereal to be wet! So, I started buying shelf-stable rice milk and for a while that did the trick.

Shortly after, So Delicious coconut milk was suddenly available in the dairy case and I gave that a go and absolutely loved it! Kashi Island Vanilla was my favorite cereal at the time and it was SO good with the coconut milk!

As the years went on, I began to branch out and try new plant milks and they all have their positives. Oh, and I love soy milk now, in fact, it's actually my favorite, followed by a very close second in oat milk.

Here are some plant milk options (and a few of my opinions):

  • Almond Milk (terrible in coffee)

    • Light, nutty flavor

    • Rich in vitamin E

    • Low in protein

  • Soy Milk (the best!)

    • High in protein

    • Rich in isoflavones

    • Thicker texture

    • Neutral flavor

  • Coconut Milk

    • Rich and creamy texture

    • Distinct coconut flavor

    • Higher in fat

    • Low in protein

  • Oat Milk (also the best - easy to make at home too!)

    • Creamy and smooth

    • Neutral, slightly sweet flavor

    • Good for frothing

  • Rice Milk

    • Light and watery texture

    • Sweet flavor

    • Low in protein

    • Good for those with nut or soy allergies

  • Cashew Milk (get the chocolate flavor!)

    • Rich and creamy

    • Slightly sweet, nutty flavor

    • Low in protein

    • Good for smoothies and coffee

  • Hemp Milk

    • Nutty flavor

    • Rich in omega-3 fatty acids

    • Moderate protein content

    • Thin texture

  • Pea Milk

    • High in protein

    • Neutral flavor

    • Good for frothing

    • Low in allergens

Tips/thoughts on using plant milk:

  • I think soy and oat are the best in coffee - always pour your milk Into your mug first, then top with hot coffee, instead of adding milk to your poured coffee, this will stop your milk of choice from separating.

  • Soy is the best milk for baking, it also sours really well for buttermilk with a bit of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. I have had success with almond and oat milk in baking recipes as well so if you have a soy allergy you still have options.

  • I don't love pea milk or foods which contain pea protein. I find that the flavor of the pea protein is pretty strong but if you're someone who has regularly used protein shakes, I expect you'll like it.

  • Banana milk is a thing, if you give it a try I'd love to know what you think!

Not a fan of milk, not dailry, not plant-based. I drink my coffee black, thankyouverymuch. A few weeks ago, my son invited his friends over for his birthday. There was a girl among the guests who is vegan, and we purchased a few products such as vegan cheddar which failed as a cheese substitute - it didn't melt! The soy milk we used to bake cupcakes, however, passed.

I drink my coffee black too but I have tried various plant milks in them so I have an opinion on the matter (since I write and talk about this stuff all of the time lol.) Vegan cheeses are still evolving but we do have some really great ones now! Unfortunately, I'm not at all familiar with your options in Switzerland so I can't even recommend one to keep in mind next time a vegan visits. I'll have to see what I can find out.

I actually don't care for milk unless I have chocolate cake. LOL But I do use almond or coconut milk from time to time. Not sure why I'm a guest, Martha D.

What an informative post! I have to admit that I love cows milk. I’ve never felt the need to try any other kinds. Maybe it’s time to give them a try.

UGH! WHy do you do this to me?!? It is for my own good. You know that I am NOT a vegan (although it is probably due to my own ignorance and willingness to turn away and not face the harsh realities that exist...) So with that terrible disclaimer, I will share that I use whole milk from cows in my protein drinks.

And in a minor and small step, and since you know that I want to try something new everyday, and I want to be considerate of your vegan preferences, and since I have to go shopping today (and that is a lot of ANDs...), I am going to pick up a bottle of Soy Milk to use…
